Creating Soil: Cover Crops And Wormies Will Help You!

 

Cover crops provide a home for extremely beneficial "insects" and more!

We all want "better" soil or at least to maintain the wonder-full soil we have - if we do. As crops are taken out of the soil, they remove soil, nutrients and water from the soil. So we need to continually [key word] add these and more to the soil.

At a recent workshop on cover crops - at the Guelph Organic Conference - OMAFRA presented the benefits of using cover crops [cc] for a number of purposes: 

• to protect the soil from 'the elements'
• to build the soil through the addition of nutrients and organic matter
• to smother/kill weeds through the dense growth of the cc - and the allelopathic actions of them
• to loosen/break up the soil via deep rooted cc's, 
• fight erosion
• maintain moisture
• radiation protection
• prevent leaching and volatilization of nutrients
• scavenge nutrients [especially N, P]
• carbon sequestation/fight the climate emergency 
• provide home for predatory insects
• provide pollination for bees, butterflies, others
  
• fight pests/diseases

The grower needs to determine which 'actions' are the most needed. Some farmers, like local organic grain producer Ray Halma cover all bases by planting mixes - consisting of 14 different plant seeds. I am also experimenting with General Seed Company's  Nitro Winter Cocktail . Their website is also a wealth of information of any cover crop your heart and soil! may dream of.

A few examples for growing in the Northeast include, but not limited to:

N source: red clover, hairy vetch, berseem, sweet clover, alfalfa, peas

Soil builder: rye grass, sweet clover, sorghum-sudan grass, rye

Erosion fighter: rye, rye grass, white clover, oats

Subsoil loosener: sorghum-sudan grass, field radish [daikon], sweet clover, alfalfa

Weed fighter: sorghum-sudan grass, rye, ryegrass, buckwheat

Pest fighter: rye, sorghum-sudan grass. One audience member suggested that wire worm can be killed using black sesame. 

More areas to consider include: the impact on the soil: we can look at subsoil impact, freeing up P & K and loosening the top soil. Looking at the soil ecology we should consider both the present condition of the following along with what we want to accomplish in the area of nematodes, disease, allelopathic effect and choking of weeds. Other important considerations include the attraction of beneficials, how well the cc's bear traffic and the length of the growing window.

The cost of seed also needs to be considered. It also should be noted that grasses produce much more organic matter than legumes do. And while grasses take up/scavenge N left over from previous crops, N is less likely to be released for a crop grown immediately after the cover crop is grown. 

Mixing grasses with legume cc's in your cropping systems helps alleviate the N-immobilization effect. This can lead to more dry organic matter and erosion control due the different growth habits of the species.

For a totally different and, in some ways, complementary approach, Carolyn Merchant notes in The Death Of Nature that Renaissance behaviour treated nature as a "person-writ-large". Peter McCullough, the most published cardiologist in the world [over 1000 publications] is one of them. He cites over 60 studies that support using Ivermectin and 30 double-blind trials also. Should not the lame-stream media [thanks Trump, lol] at least consider these studies and have him on their show? Yet, "critics" [selective] like Jesse Brown condemn journalists for not being "investigative", which he is correct about, yet he is also glee-full to join Amy in invalidating any questioning of the Covid "narrative". All of CIUT and CBC fall into line - though CBC has a "science" show - "Quirks" and a "medical" show also. Lazy and dogmatic media reps are not journalists but ideologues.

Instead, pussies [quoting South Park - so don't sue me] like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell boycott Spotify for such "fake news". Isn't it wiser to examine the evidence - you know, "evidence based" ... It's Not The Cow - It's The How!

Many people claim that cows contribute to the climate catastrophe. But simplifications are usually full of misinformation and errors. Certainly 'factory farmed' or CAFOs [confined animal feed operations] are a real problem, and these are where most of animals in the world are 'locked up'.

The animals are confined and fed mainly soy and corn that are grown off site, and hauled great distances to the "farm" [or jail some would say]. These cows fart a lot as the corn and soy cause digestion problems - increasing e-coli in the gut. Ruminants were 'made' to roam and eat grasses - not GMO grains/beans. The 'food' is sprayed with glyphosate, which causes cancer, disrupts the microbiome and also damages the microbiology of the soil Nice! See other posts for a more detailed discussion, along with references.

The 'waste' from the animals pollutes the land, water ways and leads to algae blooms and destruction of fish habitat.

To grow the soy and corn, fossil fuels are the source of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and transport which emit more carbon. But there are better ways. And when the soil is tilled, more carbon is released.

Enter 'regenerative farming'. Briefly, this system, when following 'holistic management' practices, moves the animals around the land. "Mob grazing", as bison and others naturally did/do - pulling on and chewing perennial grasses. The pulling stimulates growth and the animals' saliva, pee and pooh [excuse the technical terms] add bacteria, organic matter and nutrients to the ground. Rotating the animals before they completely devour the plants ensures the plants continuing growing. 

There isn't tilling of the soil, which would release the stored carbon and disrupt the soil structure and ever important bacteria/fungi balance in the soil. The plants transport carbon to the soil through extensive root systems [some, such as alfalfa, can go down 7 meters!], nourished and stimulated by the animals. Since these plants and soil are not disturbed through tilling, the carbon is stored in the soil.

Such farms actually build soil. And this soil sequesters carbon from the atmosphere - unlike the 'conventional' farm which produces dire amounts of carbon! The soil/life is regenerated. The micro-organisms in the soil - the key to all life - multiply and "are very happy, indeed!". [I know, they told me so!]

A good example of a farm practicing regenerative farming and reducing carbon is White Oaks Pastures in Georgia, USA. Their research quantifies both the release and storage of carbon on the farm. [chart used with permission].

This system is a very viable way, not only to stop carbon emissions at site, but to reduce world emissions. It can be done now and throughout the world. No other known 'carbon capture' system can perform such a function. Most capturing presently employed is used to get more fossil fuels from the ground - which then cause more carbon - rather than actually reducing/storing carbon.
