Do The Right Thing

Okay, Obama! We all need to do the right thing - even if it costs "us" something.

It is very expensive to not be part of the problem. Let me count the ways....

  • I might get in shape if walk or ride
  • I might make a new friend if I carpool
  • I will save money
  • I won't pollute
  • I won't contribute to the death of people murdered for oil
  • I won't help destroy Canada [Tar Sands - unethical to say the least]
  • I can spend meaning-full time with my kids exercising
  • I can model responsible behaviour [for my kids and others]
  • I will improve my digestion and, hence, my immune system
Just a few benefits...for we must look at things from a capitalistic/production model: what will I gain. What about the chippy? Also see here for more:

The Excite-ment of Air, Water, Cold And Ice!

While many curse the cold of winter, I would rather embrace the beauty of it! One chooses his/her attitude, for the most part. The same people who complain about winter, complain about rain, heat, garlic and poop! Without these, we'd be dead - but don't think - just bitch.

Back to beauty: the shapes in the ice caused by the air and movement of water - frozen in time - for a short time - are astounding. Watch here and my facebook for more pics!

A Sacred Place

This gorgeous pond...rather mysterious and love-ly...whatever the season! The roar of the toads in spring to the amazing colours/shades/shapes you see here and my youtube. See the tree reflections even in less obvious places like amongst the leaves on the right side. Of course, nothing beats the real thing...but try to be there.....

Fall "Flowers"

The cold has rushed in! But there's lots of wonder-full plants to see as they set seed to spread their love all around! Here a milkweed prepares for sharing:

Scared Frog Struggles To Escape Snake's Deadly Grip

It was rather sad - and fascinating - to watch the frog try to get out of the snake's grip. But s/he has so few defenses - making an escape attempt essentially pointless. Here's one pic at an interesting angle with an interesting composition. See my youtube channel for the video. Check out the cool water video also - but be sure to set the player to HD [the "gear" at the bottom right of the player].

Cars {YOU} Are The #1 Killer Of Children

It's true! Cars are the #1 killer of children...and young adults. This of course does not even come near the truth about the suffering caused by invasions like the recent ones against Iraq and Afghanistan that leave 4-5,000,000 refuges. Not only did 2,000,000 die, but the country continues to be in shambles and many die daily! "Peace and security" - well maybe for Haliburton and large contract companies and the U.S. military.

But even the 2,000,000 U.S. soldiers don't have peace. It is estimated that 30% or about 500,000 of them suffer from PTSD and brain damage. Washington Post's David Finkel was in Iraq and testifies to the horrors even the American soldier still experience - in his latest book and on TVO.But what about what the Iraqis? They were the ones being invaded! They had no choice!

Sadly that even if an American soldier wants to leave after seeing how s/he has been lied to, ie. "we're there to help", they will end up in prison if they don't continue. Wow...what freedom! The American anthem of freedom gets silenced...sshhhh. When some soldiers come to Canada for asylum, sadly, Harper rejects them. But why are they not allowed to be free? Quite the double speak!

Slime On Slime

2 wild looking living be-ings. While the gardener may not appreciate the work of the slug, s/he does great work breaking down plants and adding to the soil. Some even feed them beer to trap and kill them....guiiiilllty. One of my mottos is: "if you're going to kill someone/thing - get them drunk least they'll die happy!" :)

The Censorship Of Science - It's About Time, Nerds!

Let's clear something up, most nerds in science are cool! So what's up with censoring something most - well except for funda-mental-ists, perhaps - value? In Canada, the government still "funds" some science - but which "science"?

Well, according to Chris Turner, who has thoroughly researched the topic, it is not the industry-driven "science" that is suffering. In fact, there's lots of money going in this direction. But what is suffering is anything to do with climate change, the impact of the tar sands and the like - things that may "hinder" industry. For, as you know, Canada is up for sale to the highest bidder! "The Chinese" recently bought into the tar sands!

With a recent huge spill in the tar sands area, polluting fresh water and wells, we all should be concerned! 2,000,000 L of bitumen all over the place! The CNRL site's instruments didn't even detect the spill! It was found by chance. Another proof - don't trust industry to monitor itself!

And while there are some regulation on the extraction of bitumen, they date back to 1994 [the well bore integrity regulations]. With out of date regs and no limits on the extraction of water, or bitumen, well, you guess what the results will be!

But Harper is not concerned! The huge "omnibus" bill is wonder-ful piece of evil. Not only wiping out the fisheries act,  environment assessments for pipe lines, it is a gift to large polluting industries. Hey, who needs water, air, land,...oh yea...we do!

Even when government scientist go to "scientist conferences",  they may read their approved papers, but they can not respond to questions. How dare they want to! Instead their communications team will take care of it "for" them. Ah, free-dom of speech indeed! Keep blind, Oh, Canada!

Hear the great interview on CBC here. Perhaps my science kit will be of more assistance to find the truth than what I can hear from government scientists:

Wabi Sabi [Nihon-go: Japanese]

Upon seeing a huge rock on a rainy day...following my first tea ceremony, I learned a little about this concept. Most Japanese find it difficult to explain. It vaguely means dreary, lonely and beauty blended together. Many of the renowned film maker Andrei Tarkovsky films have this sense. We see it a lot in nature. This may help some:

Slow Rather Than Fast Brings Peace

Overcast days are the best for photographing. You don't have a have contrast between shade and sun then. And the skies are oft amazing. Here's one from Georgian Bay. Lucky, though, it didn't rain - much better to be out canoeing than sitting in a tent! See here for more pics.

Be-ing in such a beautiful place and experiencing beauty brings great joy and peace. Material possessions do not compete nor bring lasting "joy". We are constantly told to desire more and more things/stuff. But don't listen/obey!

As Fukuoka says:
Extravagance of desire is the fundamental cause which has led the world into its present predicament."

An-Other Victim Of "Civilized" People

Most know that frogs are one of the first to die or be deformed as a result of human impact on the eco-system. Whether deaths be from pesticides or cars - we see more and more dying each year. See here for great info and what you can do. The obvious things we can do include eating organic food, local food, driving less or not at all. Especially after it rains, toads and frogs go on to the roads. So we need to drive very closely...or walk carefully! I have semi-stepped on a toad...felt him underneath so I didn't hurt him. What a relief. Would never want to hurt these guys!

Creating eco-systems for them to live in is also vital. Both in our yards and the whole world - we need to keep things as undisturbed as possible. We need to view world from a nonhuman perspective before we decide how to live/move/eat etc. A healthy human approach would do the same - working toward harmony - not domination of any human or nonhuman.

These all require individual actions but also institutional/systemic changes. The reign of "rugged individualism" and global capitalism must end. Well, they are just illusions anyway. The bailouts of 2008 show both don't work! And in a purely capitalistic state, the government would not bail out! In many ways we live in a socialist state.

The frightening thing is that even conservatives see the bank system as having changed VERY little! They also see a future collapse as inevitable. See TVO's  The Agenda for the discussion. Armine Yalnizyan has some fascinating analysis - more on here at policyalternatives and TVO.

An-other victim of human impact is pictured above. See past posts for more and here.

Plant Anything But Grass To Attract These!

The world is so full of diversity! Yet some North Americans who have land are obsessed with mono-culture. Whether it be the huge broccoli field or the enormous factory farm - both are destructive and unfriendly to both the human and nonhuman world.

Grass is another mono-culture. Lawn mowers pollute as much as driving some 200-500 km. They have no pollution control. Regardless, cars are extremely polluting - lawn mowers more so. And cutting grass is a waste of time! Grow some veges or at least plants that supply food for butterflies, bees, ....

If you like honey/fruit..., bees need certain plants to get "food" from. Grass is NOT one of them. Dandelions are though. So grow them instead! But that means challenging the status quo and actually thinking and caring.

Upon altering ones area, or keeping it from being altered to begin with, we may see wonders like these [ok, maybe not this one in Canada... To see more go here]:

Cup Plant Attracts Wonder-full Butterflies!

Wow! Just 12 hours after posting the last one on the cup plant...guess who arrives? 2 amazing large butterflies! See here for more - the male Canadian Tiger Swallowtail.

Are these not enough to motivate people to stop worshiping their lawns? How common is it to hear some dude "well I have to cut the grass.......what will the neighbours think?". Ugh! Start using your brain, conscience and "free" "will"! "Be a the right thing!"

Stop watching those stupid, lying TV commercials that tell you that "weeds" are evil. Who decides what weeds are? Who says they are evil? Who benefits from convinces us [wow, aren't we easily convinced!] that they are evil - perhaps biological terrorists - and must be eradicated! We will even use toxins that kill insects, worms, birds, pollute waterways, wells....all just to step in obey/follow the company, neighbour, society....

"Be a the right thing!"

To reveal the stupidity: the dandelion is the stock [example] weed. Hmmm. Can it not be eaten? Is it not medicine? Is it not food also for insects? Is it not beautiful? [Unless you have been brain-washed...literally sold your mind/eyes to the pesticide companies]....

Come on boys! "Be a the right thing!"

One of the largest butterflies in North America is this giant swallowtail - rare in Southern Ontario:

Plant This Instead Of Grass!

This amazing plant is native to Southern Ontario and other areas of Canada. It spreads quite quickly and can be enjoyed by humans and nonhumans alike! The "cup plant" feeds insects - for example, butterflies - including monarchs! - bees and many different ones. And in the fall when the seeds form, they feed the birds - including yellow finches!

It's a beautiful plant. It gets its name as it forms a cup at the stem [which is wild looking - square!]. Insects and birds can drink the water "from the cup".

When Will Enough Be Enough?

We are almost pre-destined to be un-happy until we accumulate.

Give me more.

More is better.

Bigger is better.

[I must compete............I must be better than _________]

..............................THEN I will be "happy"

But this is the problem.

There is a way out.

There is an alternative.

But first we must recognize the problem and cause:

Saturday, 31 August 2013

We live in a very macho society. Not only men, but woman have absorbed the ideas/lives of repression. When was the last time a man cried? Why would many rather be "tough" and trample another - physically, emotionally, economically, militarily, .... than to turn the other cheek - as Jesus commanded. To be willing to suffer for an-other - rather than to cause suffering - is this a lost virtue/goal

"We live in a culture that encourages us not to take our own suffering seriously, but rather to make light of it or even to laugh about it. What is more, this attitude is regarded as a virtue, and many people - of whom I used to be one - are proud of their lack of sensitivity toward their own fate and particularly toward their fate as a child" - Alice Miller The Drama of the Gifted Child

Beauty, Taste, Health Benefits...A Woman?

While the plant pictured is like a "good woman" can have as many as you fact, the more you have the better! [And not get "in trouble"..well unless you were rich and a "good" Jewish man during the bible times]

This amazing plant....not only is anti-viral, antiseptic, diaphoretic, cholagogue, hypotensive, anti-spasmotic... it is so easy to grow! It's a good indicator of the health of your soil also.

This is the fruit/seeds of garlic...note the beauty of the seeds and the little flowers:

Destruction Will Terrify You

It seems ironic that Christians and others hear about the destruction of fellow humans and non-humans, yet continue to wipe them out. The quest [what the euphemism!] for gas/oil....has killed 2000000 Iraqis, 5000000 refugees....let alone nonhuman victims.

Now fracking is getting a lot of attention. More on this later. Everywhere from the Colbert Report to  The Nature Of Things have detailed emphasis on the exploitation of nature/humans by a some greedy companies. And while Canadians laud over their Americans to the south....Canadians have no minerals rights even if they own the land! So Mr. Corporation can walk on your property and plop his [sic] drill in the ground.

Ironic that the very bible many say to believe, foresaw or pronounced similar evils:

"Civilization People" Are Stupider Than Spiders

So who is "stupider"?
Spiders or those so called civilization people [you know who you are - especially if you can read this! :)]

Well, let's see....

Spiders kill insects that spread disease
Humans spread disease - literally and figuratively!

Spiders eat only what they need
Humans eat and eat and eat

Spiders don't get fat
Humans eat stupid "food" and get fat

Spiders under-stand limits
Humans "want" [or are told/taught to want] more and more and more...

Spiders keep harmony in the world
Humans [supposed civilized ones] create eco-logical, economical, ... im-balance

Spiders keep humans alive
Humans [silly ones} kill spiders

Spiders capture and suck the blood of weaker be-ings
Humans [especially those in wealthy nations] attack, kill and suck the blood of the poor and weaker ones
 .....oops that's a similarity...

Spiders Save The Humans [Brain-Washed Dummies Refuse To Say Thanks]

Enough Is Enough - Old Canadians Are Selfish And Greedy!

Wow! Today chatting with another retired old person. Again I see - or they out rightly proclaim they don't care about pollution, human impact, or much else other than their time and goals. A 75 year old man telling me all that matters is his life. Wow!

He's not the first! I have found that almost all of these retired dudes, people just don't care [about other humans, their impact on air, water, etc....about nature - and we are nature].

As a result, the poor victim below - shrieks in pain. Along with the snake I just saw on a very private road - almost the same spot. Not to mention the countless frogs....

We have to change if anyone can survive. It is saddening and bizarre that today, people can still be insane - with the sanction of business, government, bosses, police....

Yet they all jump on the anti-environmentalist 'bandwagon'. What is an enviro...? So you don't like clean air? Clean water.....Oh, yea...make somebody else care and try to cause less suffering of all - and you crap on them - and reap the benefits - while going on selfishly fucking your fellow humans, animals, water, food, bugs, ....

So sorry....I forgot - all that matters is you, your 'en-joy-ment'....your consumer-ism!

Am I weird? Who is living in real-it-y? "sorry" I am not insane...bring back the mirror!

To destroy your habitat - that is insanity!

Jehovah Witnesses Cause Environmental Devastation Of Biblical Proportions

Isn't it ironic that religious people want to tell you to believe in God [or capitalism, Buddism, etc], yet ignore/destroy the world they believe their Creator made? Huh?

"Jehovah Witnesses" [are they really witnesses for Jehovah?] drive around [and a-round] seeking souls to save. Yet they violate the very creation of the God they say they worship. Polluting also violates humans  - as we are part of nature.

Here is picture to document their violation upon an attempt to convert moi. They never returned as I confronted them with their hypocrisy. Unfortunately, this victim wasn't seen till later. But would they/we care? We need to stop we viewing our-selves as separate from nature.

Yet the book they preach from, also condemns them [/us?]:
How the oppressor has come to an end!...
All the lands are at rest and at peace;
they break into singing.
Even the pine treees and the cedars of Lebanon
exult over you and say,
"Now that you have been laid low,
no woodsman comes to cut us down."
Isaiah 14 NIV

Tiger Beetles Are Faster Than YOU!

These incredible predators of the insect world help to keep "things" in balance. They are part of the largest animals group on earth: beetles - which comprise of over 300,000 species. Beetles eat many things from rotting corpses to flower petals.  Tiger beetles, as predators, keep grasshopper, caterpillar and other insect populations in check. They are also prey to dragonflies, frogs, bird and small animals.

These guys can run as fast as 2.5m/sec! That is equivalent to 100 times there body length/second. If you compare that to the fastest human sprinter who clocks in at about 6 times his body length/second - that's pretty impressive!

Tiger beetles can't maintain a constant internal body temperature so they raise their long legs to create a flow of air under themselves - cooling off their bodies. You'll find them on roads sometimes but they prefer leaves, forests and less disturbed areas. So if you have land - keep it "messy" - i.e. natural - that way nature can survive. And since humans are part of nature also, both humans and tiger beetles will have a future two-gether. They can live without us, but can we live without them?

The Chinese Take Over Mexico!

You think you are finally free of "them"....then they appear even on remote islands in the Pacific Ocean! The Chinese have a saying: "wherever the sun sets, you will find the Chinese". For more on the Chinese, consult the specialist/comedian Russel Peters!

This is an outdoor kitchen at a small restaurant on Isla Holbox. Check out the "health standards"! A few seconds before the photo, a dog and bird were wandering around.

Note the China [espanol] trying to take over the kitchen, the chef's job, the restaurant, the island ..... Does even our restaurant food have to be made in China? :)

Wild Edible Plant Tastes Tropical

The first time trying the fruit of this plant, I was astonished with the amazing taste. It tasted like a mix of pineapple and mango. Not knowing if it was safe or not, I spit it out. And now, sadly, I never find any ripe fruits. This is the mayapple - a common forest plant in Southern Ontario.

See if you can see the baby fruit:

War Is Not The Answer

At the end of the art crawl I went by a grocery store where the owner was throwing the dirty water onto the street. Like many Hamilton "convenience [read crap food]" stores, it was operated by a man from Iraq. We talked about the invasion of his country. He said things were generally fine until 2004 when the U.S. destroyed the country.

I asked if he was glad Sadam was dead. He said no. As long as you didn't do anything stupid and threaten Sadam, life was good. If you were bad, you paid for it.

He said before the American army invaded, it was safe. He said that stores would be looted here if the power went off. His store had been robbed here and the police were of no use.

We chatted about how oblivious Canadians and Americans are to the terror we sponsor. About 2000000 have died in Iraq. Many millions are refugees. How many think about this? Is cheap gas the only thing that matters? Are people so brain dead and obedient to some/any authority that they ignore justice, love, truth? Has convenience become our god? "Give me convenience or give me death" is chanted by our act-i-on-s!

Will we, who use more energy than any other country, will we ever stop being so greedy? When will we "sacrifice" so others may even live - both humans and nonhumans?!

As the sign on my lawn says:

This put a sober end to a night of mind-less cleave-age! What's up with that anyway? Have some women lost self-respect? While others starve/lose all - shouldn't we worry about this - and try to change our lives/the system that continues it vs. the obsession with boobies? An old sociology prof said they are just bags of fat and organs or something. But what does he know?!

Oil And Everything Do Not Mix!

Let's be honest. Cars are not neutral. They/we kill.

Well many lie to them-selves that their lives are more important than others - human or non-human - we see more devastation as a result. The oil spill in Arkansas again says "stop it! Time to change, MF's!". But who will listen. Even if some only "care" about many die from war for resources - Iraq count at about 2,000,000 - not including 3-4,000,000 refugees! We should be ashamed and stop making demands for oil - and "sacrifice" so that others may live!

On a local level, this guy was crushed by some human who thinks his/her life is more important than other living be-ings.

The Land Is Mine

"The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my must provide for the redemption of the land..." Leviticus 25

If Christians, Jews, Muslims took this text, which they consider sacred, seriously, we would have a mighty different planet. And yet the essence of capitalism/greed/religion is to take, own, devour the land. If the land isn't outrightly taken, it is exploited for resources. Only barbarians would do such a thing...but remember there isn't any oil in Iraq!

But the land will have its Sabbaths.."I will remember the land. For the land will be deserted by them and will enjoy its Sabbaths...They will pay for their sins because they rejected my laws [one was to give land its Sabbath!] - Leviticus 26

Sugar Free Pear Crisp

Ok, Ok....the rave of 123poopitout on the recipe:

Pears, as most fruits are very sweet. So sugar is not needed. Much healthier, as sugar is linked to many diseases. Most crisps are so sweet you don't even taste the fruit, oats or butter....just a sweet, gross taste. Once you bake without sugar/sweeteners you really "see" the difference. Try to use organic and local ingredients...

1. cut enough pears into medium sized pieces to fill a loaf pan 2/3
2. sprinkle some cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger or....
about 2 cups oats
1/2-3/4 cup butter [or oil, but butter is key!]
pinch of sea salt
mix well together
put on pears, pressing gently with a fork to compact it
cook 350 for about 30 min. till pears are soft and top is browning
the most important part is to bring some over to me! :)

"Experience" This:

......this representation
of an actual experience!

beauty is there
you don't need to fly 2000km
to experience "it"

Not For Sale - Must Be Experienced

In our consumerist world
we expect
even demand
to full-fill us.

We chase
dreams of
"nice" houses
"nice" cars
"nice" clothes...

But do
"do it"
for us?   {more importantly: do they make us "nice"}

at what expense
to the poor
to nature
to our-selves?

We watch sports
but do not play them

We watch TV/computers/devices
